Carpentry Volunteers Required
We are looking for a person/persons to assist with the creation of a mobile, eco-friendly, multi-functional community space. The overall theme of Chrysalis is that of a “cabinet of ecological curiosities”, involving elements that will be made by a variety of community groups and crafts people brought together around a “base build” provided by the design and make company WoCo.
The role we are offering will involve working alongside Luke Jones from WoCo to construct the largely timber aspects of the modifications and fit out of a Luton van. Specifically the work to be undertaken will be:
- Machining, assembling and finishing elements of the construction. This will involve the use of a range of hand and power tools and some stationary machinery. Full training and guidance will be given.
- Helping with the continual documentation of the project ( photographing, filming of progress shots.)
Assisting with the handling of completed elements of the build: Some components of the construction may be made away from the van and lifted into place. This may involve some reasonably heavy lifting.
Some experience of carpentry and working with power tools and machinery would be desirable, although full training will be provided. In terms of physicality, the work will require some heavy lifting, but nothing unreasonable. Other members of the Workshop Collaborative team will be available to assist with the heaviest manoeuvres.
Due to the nature of this project (fitting within the van’s dimensions and weight restrictions,) the construction will need to be realised as accurately as possible, so an eye for detail will be required especially during the finishing of components and the construction of internal joinery. In general, an interest in woodwork is essential.
Help on this project will be greatly received and an employers reference can be given for
anyone willing to undertake this role.
